Orthoceras fossils are the remnants of extinct, squid-like cephalopods that existed from approximately 488 to 200 million years ago, predominantly during the Ordovician Period. The name 'straight horn' refers to these ancestors of the nautilus and octopus, which resided within long, straight conical shells frequently found in polished black limestone from Morocco.
