This gorgeous horse hair pottery by artist Deb Burckhard is a style fabled to have come from ancient Indian tribes that wanted to preserve the spirit of their horses at various phases of life.
The pottery pieces are generally simple in form and are fired at a high temperature to give the vessel strength. The piece is then fired a second time to just below red hot and quickly removed from the kiln. The horse hair is gently laid on in strands. The heat from the vessel causes the hair to curl and kink around as it leaves a black carbon trail. The pots are not glazed and are very porous.
Horse hair pottery is best used as a piece of art, but if you choose to put fresh flowers in the vases. It is best to put a liner such as a plastic bag or cup inside before adding the flowers.
