Artist Deb Burckhard's horse hair pottery exemplifies a legendary style believed to have originated from ancient Indian tribes seeking to honor their horses' spirits at various life phases.
Characterized by simple forms, the pottery pieces are fired at high temperatures to achieve vessel durability. A second firing to just below red hot is followed by swift removal from the kiln. Delicate strands of horse hair are then applied. As the vessel's heat causes the hair to curl and kink, it leaves behind a black carbon trail.
Notably, the pots are unglazed and highly porous. Ideally suited as decorative art, horse hair pottery can also accommodate fresh flowers in its vases, provided a protective liner, such as a plastic bag or cup, is inserted beforehand.
